On July 14, 2008, Black Hills Corp. acquired Aquila's electric utility in Colorado and its natural gas utilities in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska.

The Energy Resources group is the electric energy supply operation for Black Hills Energy. Energy Resources is responsible for U.S. regulated power activities, including fuel, purchased power, generation dispatch, renewable energy and wholesale customer relations.

  • Marketing and Generation Dispatch – Oversees dispatch of electricity from power plants to Black Hills Energy Networks customers in Colorado. Buys, imports and sells power through our own transmission lines.
  • Resource Management – Develops and manages long-term purchased power contracts and off-system marketing opportunities.
  • Purchase Power, Fuel, and Operational Analysis - Solicits and negotiates long-term power supply contracts. Oversees procurement and management of coal fuel supplies for owned coal-fired generation facilities. Provides analytical services to other functions within Energy Resources.
  • Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation - Manages Black Hills Energy's Renewable Energy initiatives as a responsible corporate citizen and progressive participant in the exploration of renewable energy opportunities.
  • Primary Regions and Operating Experience - Operates within the NERC reliability regions of MAPP, SPP, MAIN, SERC and WSCC, and is a member of WSPP. Black Hills Energy Networks' US generation and transmission in the eastern interconnect will function under the MidWest ISO.
